real life terror with the cheap veneer of a travel brochure

When a director decides to re-stage a real-world atrocity in the form of a thriller, they had better be prepared to show their ethical workings in the margin. Much of the time they are – as was the case with two recent, very different films about the 2011 Norway shootings, Paul Greengrass’s 22 July and Erik Poppe’s Utøya–July 22.

Each one was a testing, troubling watch, but also persuasively argued the case in its own way that this particular horror was one that deserved to be stared down in the mirror. The spectre of exploitation – which often looms uncomfortably…
